The works of artist Hojan arise from her observations of everyday life, particularly those seemingly chaotic or unconventional situations that prompt her to reconsider the concept of ‘the human.’
At the SWAB BARCELONA 2024 International Contemporary Art Fair, ss space space is pleased to present ‘Those Yet to Come,’ a solo exhibition of new paintings and works by Hojan.
In her works, the human may refer to the distorted bodies in her ceramic pieces, contorted by external forces or mental states, or to the figures in her paintings, existing in isolation and detached from societal structures. ‘Those Yet to Come’ also alludes to the audience—Hojan views her paintings as a medium for dialogue with viewers, inviting them to reflect on their life experiences through the act of observation. In this sense, the human inhabits both the artwork and the world beyond it.
Hojan’s practice is influenced by Spanish Cubism and Eastern still-life painting. She frequently begins with a blank canvas, allowing herself to attune to the rhythm of lines and blocks of colour as she paints. Through this process, she uncovers points of intersection between her daily observations and her creative output. The ongoing dialogue between artist and canvas serves as a pathway for exploring the concept of ‘the human.’ By layering bold colours, abstract spatial structures, and disjointed body language, Hojan crafts a narrative that is at once surreal and deeply grounded in reality.
In Hojan’s paintings, objects are depicted in an incomplete state, represented through narratives that deviate from convention. This approach allows both the physical and psychological elements of her work to drift in ambiguous spaces. Like perceptions and definitions yet to fully coalesce, these elements remain in a state of flux. Through this uncertainty, the artist seeks to carve out a narrative space, inviting the audience to engage with their own imagination to rediscover the conditions and environments of ‘human’ existence. In doing so, viewers are encouraged to reflect on the relationship between the individual and society.
Born in Taiwan in 1994, Hojan received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in the United States in 2019. She currently resides in Taiwan, where she continues her artistic practice. Her works have been acquired by institutions and private collectors in both the United States and Taiwan.
